Love one another as I have loved you

STM Art & Design

Before children speak, they sing. Before they write, they paint. A soon as they stand, they dance. Art is the basis of human expression.

At St Thomas More, we recognise the therapeutic value of art and its positive impact on wellbeing. Through our carefully sequenced curriculum and breadth of opportunities, children will have the opportunity to become confident and proficient in a variety of techniques involved with drawing, painting, sculpture, collage and printing. It is our aim that our young artists will be inspired by a deep understanding of how art has both reflected and shaped our history, and how it is a fundamental means of personal expression. Children will leave us liberated, with their creativity ignited and with the confidence to create and invent their own works of art.

We have some excellent displays around school that showcase our art work…

We are delighted to announce that St Thomas More has been awarded the Artsmark Silver Award by the Arts Council England! (November 2022)

We have used the arts award programme to enrich our curriculum with the arts and provide a range of culturally diverse opportunities for the children.

Feedback from the assessors is below if you would like to read some of the things that we have accomplished:

“ Despite Covid lockdowns and the limits they imposed, St Thomas More Catholic Primary has done very well to work with partners to explore the potential of the Arts in education. Your learners have been on a story-telling workshop at the millennium gallery, visited Gully's art festival and Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and participated in West End in Schools journey of 'A Christmas Carol' through a range of drama techniques. Manchester Actors Company provided a whole school performance of 'In the garden of poetry', where a range of poems were explored and performed in a way which children were inspired and enriched with literature. Y1 and Y5 children have taken part in the Sheffield and Catholic Dance Cluster festival. Clearly, a lot of new opportunities have been commissioned, designed and participated in and you have been inspired and motivated by these interventions to consider how art might feature more through the whole curriculum. "

We will now strive to keep the momentum going by setting new goals to further enhance the opportunities for children at St Thomas More.
