Why do we teach Science at St Thomas More?

D

At St Thomas More, our intent is to give every child a broad and balanced science curriculum which reflects the equality and diversity practices in school. It enables them to confidently explore and discover what is around them, so they have a deeper understanding of the world we live in. Our curriculum enables children to become enquiry-based learners collaborating through researching, investigating and evaluating experiences. It encourages respect for living organisms and for the physical environment. The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum supports children’s understanding of science through the planning and teaching of ‘Understanding the World.’ Children find out about objects, materials and living things using all their senses looking at similarities, differences, patterns and change. Both the environment and skilled practitioners foster curiosity and encourage explorative play and children are motivated to ask questions about why things happen and how things work.

D

Our children are encouraged to use their natural environment around them to explore. We provide exciting, practical hands-on experiences that encourage curiosity and questioning. Our curriculum is well-planned and sequenced and has been carefully designed and developed with the need of every child at the centre of what we do. We equip our children with not only the minimum statutory requirements of the science National Curriculum, but prepare them for opportunities, responsibilities and experiences beyond their primary school years.

BRITISH SCIENCE WEEK 2024  POSTER COMPETITION
d
STM took part in British Science Week 2024
(8-17th March 2024), which marked the Week’s 30th anniversary. The theme this year was ‘Time’ – there were loads of STEM topics to be explored!
Children could create a poster showing how a certain type of technology has
changed over time, or even the advancement of time-telling technology itself.
Entries must be 1 page of A4 or A3 only. Please hand in your poster competition entries
to Mrs Butterworth no later than Friday 22nd March.

Year 4 Autumn States of Matter including the Water Cycle

Tuesday 12th September 2023

WALT: Distinguish between solids, liquids and gases

Today, we started to learn about the differences between the properties and behaviour of solids, liquids and gases. We worked in our table groups to sort materials into solids, liquids and gases.

We then practically explored the behaviour of the particles in solids, liquids and gases in the hall

Tuesday 14th November 2023

WALT: Identify and describe the different stages of the water cycle

Today in our Science lesson, we worked with our partners to create our own ‘water cycle in a bag’ models. We drew a basic diagram of the water cycle onto our bags, and then filled them all with 100ml of water. We’ve put our water cycle models onto our classroom window, so that we can observe the water cycle in action over the course of the next week.
